2013 SCDG Boardwalk Bombshells vs SVRG Dot.Kamikazes

A year and a half ago I bought this fancy 24mm lens* (in anticipation of shooting some banked track derby, which didn't actually happen).

I have so much fun with this lens.  It's not really the main lens to have on the camera once the action starts.  But, it's the lens I put on the camera and goof around with before the doors open for the audience or as the audience starts to trickle in.

I played around with the idea of trying to capture action on the jam line at the start of the jam as I did in yesteryear during Santa Cruz's warmups.

With the press box on the straight-away between turns 4 and 1, this isn't such an easy thing to pull off.

And it's good for shooting without using the viewfinder.

There's a certain style of street photography that is surreal or merely clever that tries to incorporate advertising (billboard, shop window, or bus stop advertising) with actors found on the street.  The dancers for the halftime show practiced before the doors opened and their act incorporated punching through a face (made of paper).  I immediately recognized the opportunity of this prop, but it's unfortunate that the captain's/coach's/referee's pre-bout meeting happened so far a way from the prop.  I took a couple snapshots, but this is one of those coulda/woulda/shoulda shots.  There wasn't any "actors" nearby to really make this shot.

I lucked out and got to see the half time act practice their routine before the doors opened so I knew where to be with my fun 24mm lens.

some times it pays off to get a sneak preview of the halftime show before the doors open.

And the 24mm is good for those referee shots.

The 24mm is never too long for the team photos.

And it's fun for after the bout as well.

* I don't know why the promotion of this lens on the Leica site features cows.  Do they not have roller derby in Germany?
