20170318 ShEvil Dead vs Oakland Outlaws

Bay Area Derby's season opener was held at a new elegant yet raw venue, The 16th Street Station in Oakland, CA.

I haven't shot derby outdoors for some time. At the 16th Street Station derby is played outdoors on a concrete patio.  Bleachers surround the track on three sides.

That's the 16th Street Station in the background, covered in graffiti.

I brought three cameras: the little point-n-shoot with a 28mm point of view, the black and white camera and the color camera.

The color camera must of gulped down a bunch of dust and sand the first time I changed a lens on it, as ALL the photos had dust spots on them.  Fortunately, I could fix the dust spots with Capture One on one photo and copy and paste the corrections onto all the color photos.

It was a different experience editing the photos.... so many power lines, telephone poles, freeways, and razor wire in the backgrounds

The halftime show was a whistle-led drill team wielding baseball bats instead of traditional wooden toy rifles

which I found to be very compelling

During the second half, I caught something in the corner of my eye, and  instinctively clicked the shutter button and clicked through the aftermath for several photos.  The photographer next to me asked me, "Did you get that?"  I said, "Maybe."  I clicked the "play" button on the camera and clicked back several photos until I found it.  I yelled really really loud when I found this photo looking back at me on the little TV screen on the back of the camera

I also really like this one of Danymite's fan boy's in the background cheering

After the bout was over I sneaked around the corner to shoot some graffiti-porn at the 16th Street Station

the Doomsday Machine of Kala Point

Over several years, I've made photos of this beach log at Kala Point.

For whatever reason the log seems like a compelling photographic subject.

At some point, I connected this to that old (1967) Star Trek episode, "Doomsday Machine," featuring a gigantic beach log from another galaxy that could kill entire planets.

How has the Doomsday Machine of Kala Point evolved over the years?

In previous years, the Doomsday Machine is partially choking on sand.  But not so much anymore.

And now it seems to be surrounded by less sand and more rocks
